A word of thanks to Bradford Girl Scout Troop #65340 for not only participating in the Step Up for Colleen 5K, but also for a badge they created in memory of Colleen. According to an article in the Andover Townsman, “participating in the Step Up for Colleen was important because it was part of the Girl Scout Promise and Law – which says Girls Scouts are ‘friendly and helpful, considerate and caring and make the world a better place’. “All these characteristics are things Colleen lived by every day. And that is why we chose to celebrate her life. She (Colleen) is an inspiration to not only her students, but to the students she has never met,’ (Jessica) McGinley shared on behalf of her troop.”

As we saw last year following the tragic events at the Boston Marathon, running can be therapeutic for a community.
In the same spirit, a new 5K walk/run planned for this spring will honor the memory of Colleen Ritzer, the Danvers High School teacher slain last October.

ANDOVER — Nina Caron saw the good in slain Danvers High School teacher Colleen Ritzer of Andover from a young age.
Caron’s oldest daughter was one of Ritzer’s closest friends growing up and, like many, she and her family were rocked by the young teacher’s death.
UPDATE 6:30 p.m.: Cherry Farm Creamery reports that $3,500 was raised Saturday.
(NECN: Katelyn Tivnan, Danvers, Mass.) – It’s not your typical breakfast, but serving up ice cream with a side of waffles drew a big crowd to Cherry Farm Creamery in Danvers, Mass.
Each February, the business holds an Ice Cream for Breakfast fundraiser.
A line wrapped around the parking Saturday as crowds waited to get their ice cream and to make a donation to a good cause – this year, it’s one that hits close to home.
Money raised will go to college scholarship funds in honor of slain teacher Colleen Ritzer.

A bowling tournament Sunday in Woburn will raise funds for college scholarships in memory of slain Danvers High teacher Colleen Ritzer.
The candlepin bowling will take place Sunday at the Woburn Bowladrome. The tournament starts at noon and consists of teams of four players.
Both events will raise money for the Colleen Ritzer Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Victims’ families were incensed at the state Supreme Judicial Court’s ruling last month to strike down mandatory life sentences without parole for juveniles convicted of first-degree murder. Now, lawmakers equally upset at the ruling have filed a bill to push back on that decision.
BOSTON (CBS) – State lawmakers are pushing a bill through Beacon Hill in the wake of a controversial ruling last month by the state’s Supreme Judicial Court. In that ruling, the court decided that all juveniles who are convicted of first degree murder before they are 18 years old must eventually become eligible for parole.
